5 Types Of Goods That Are Harder To Move Than You Think

Many of your household belongings will be relatively easy to safely pack during a big move. But some can be complicated for reasons that aren't always obvious. What are some of these surprisingly challenging items and how can a professional help? Here are five to consider.

1. Pets and Livestock

Moving your cat or dog may not be too complex because most owners are used to traveling on some level with their pets. However, other animals, and their paraphernalia, require more planning, careful execution, and setup. This commonly includes birds, fish in aquariums, reptiles, and large animals like horses or goats. If your pet's move will need special effort, contact the movers in advance to craft a plan.

2. Collectibles

Collectibles are challenging for many reasons. First, they tend to be of higher value and are therefore a bigger risk when moving. Plus, many collectibles are somewhat fragile and must be handled with extra protection. Finally, organizing a collection for travel calls for planning and good organization specific to this particular set of goods.

If your collection is extensive, fragile, or particularly valuable, work with the movers to determine a plan of action that protects it at all stages.

3. Exercise and Sports Equipment

The biggest challenges presented by gym and exercise equipment are their weight and unusual shapes. Most pieces should only be moved by teams and with the proper equipment. And because of their shape, weight, and size, they can rarely be placed into existing containers and will need to be handled and protected by hand.

4. Large Intact Items

Some large household items, like bed frames and tables, can be at least partially disassembled to move through corridors and doorways. But if you examine other pieces, you may find that they cannot be disassembled much or at all. These can make the act of removing them from your home a true challenge.

A big sectional, pianos, tall bookshelves, and oversize wall paintings or art often need additional assessment by professionals before they can be moved. Alternative means of moving them, including removing doors or using nearby windows and sliders to exit the house, may call for more time and planning.

5. Technical Equipment

Technology and electronic equipment often seem relatively easy to move. But two problems make things harder: first, you'll need to disconnect myriads of wiring and connections, all the while remembering how to set up the device again. Second, the equipment can be somewhat fragile and require careful handling. A professional team can help ensure that what you disassemble here can be reassembled correctly in your new house.
